I use an individual teaching approach and I always play during my lessons to demonstrate examples to my students. I aim to take into account my students musical tastes, whilst ensuring that they learn the basics first. I teach my students how to sight-read from scratch, if necessary and also how to improvise if they wish to do so (and when they are ready). I use fun musical activities such as question and answer phrases and ear training exercises, plus backing tracks.
I will often encourage students to learn duets alongside me, which is good experience if and when, they want to join a band or group. This also improves musical timing and confidence. I also use a variety of music teaching books, often with backing tracks, which I feel keeps students interest and enthusiasm and prevents boredom from setting in. I encourage regular practise for faster progression and again, this prevents my students from getting bored.
Regarding learning the recorder; I believe this is a good first instrument for a person, especially a young child. The fingering technique is virtually the same as a saxophone and similar to most woodwind instruments. It is very light to hold and inexpensive to buy and obviously the same as any other instrument would be, regarding learning how to read music.
I organize an Annual concert for all of my students to take part in, no matter what level they have reached. I do not pressure people into taking music exams but I am experienced in this, if they wish to do so.
I enter my students under the ABRSM music exams and I have a 100 % pass rate. I hold an up to date enhanced DBS and I genuinely love teaching. I am adept at putting people at their ease, which ensures that they get the best out of their music lessons with me.
